Well I honestly am getting dumber here in Africa! All of us have been loosing our minds….. I don’t know if it is because of the heat, hard work, new environment, smell, humidity, and the list could go on!! I cannot download pictures again today. I have not had a second to try and everything here takes a thousand times longer to download. It has been a crazy day yet again. We taught at the school from 8 till 11 Cameron and I taught about the pathway of blood through the heart. It was amazing the information these kids were retaining. This is information I did not learn probably till college. They would come up to the board and explain with a picture the pathway of blood to the class. After teaching them this we took out our stethoscopes and let them listen to one another’s heart, they loved this !! After school we took the taxi and went to the money exchange, and then boarded the bus back to Manya Krobo.
We went to the market through the village today as we were trying to get to the women’s college. Today at the college we finished up teaching about HIV awareness and prevention, when all of the sudden a huge rain storm hit, when I say huge I mean huge!!!! We were in a hut with a tin roof it was so loud that we had to stop teaching. While we were waiting to have our driver Francis bring the bus as close as he could, we played games and talked with the girls. As the girls were teaching us one of there favorite games there was a HUGE BOOM!!!!!!!!! We all scram and some dropped to the floor. I looked out the window and there was a huge poof of smoke and dirt, lightning had struck. It was seriously one of the craziest things that I have ever experienced. After that scary episode I just about wet my pants as well as two others, so we set out onto an adventure to find a bathroom in this rain with one of the girls from the school leading. While running in the rain we scaled a wall and I just about slipped( TOMS do not have the best traction). We went into Paulinas house ( the women who runs the school) and used her toilet. Her toilet is comparable to an airplane toilet, and it is especially hard to use in the dark. We started back to our bus and yes it was still pouring! We walked through the jungle jumping over huge puddles and continued our way through the market to our bus. Everyone at the market staring us down and yelling “AYE”!! yelling this is the way that they greet and welcome you. I was very wet when I got onto the bus! I just got done doing some homework and preparing for tomorrows lesson which is an overview of sign language, the heart, and the new lesson is on germs. I am very excited to teach about germs and hand washing. I am doing a fun experiment with the kids by putting glitter all over their hands with lotion so it sticks. The glitter represents the germs. After showing them their hands I will teach them the proper way to wash them with a song.
It is so hard for me to explain everything that has happened in just a few paragraphs. I wish you all could be with me! I do not even think that I can explain what it is like in person, it is just something you have to experience. What a different life everyone in the world has. One thought that came through my head today was that I am just seeing a little piece of the world, and never thought that a life like this could ever exist. What else is out there? What else is there I can do to help? Is there seriously worse poverty than this? This is truly a life changing experience I would never change!
PS: The gutters here are where people go to the bathroom… #1 and #2. It is stinky stagnate green water hahha. Ok so you get the picture. As we were rushing to the bus in the rain I just about slipped right into the gutter. I was literally centimeters away. Advice: don’t wear TOMS when it is raining!
